  • Ross is car owner! First road trip: up Rte. 2

In an alarmingly productive day, Ross bought a car, got it insured and registered, figured out how to open the gas cap (Volkswagen makes it part of a secret club initiation), and hit the road behind his parents to upstate New York for Thanksgiving. The turnpile was bumper-to-bumper, so his father chose Rte. 2. Twisty, windy, climbing on-the-side-of-mountains Rte. 2. Foggy, too. With a hairpin turn at the end. Well, there wasn’t a lot of traffic.

Ross did very well. His father, did, too, navigating the fog and darkness ahead of him. His mother just was tense. It takes a lot longer  — through Williamstown and North Adams, home of a surprisingly tasty all-you-can-eat Chinese place; through Petersburg, a place, if you had to smuggle something between Massachusetts and New York State, that would be the perfect place to do it; through Troy and Colonie on finally to 87 to the Thruway. But the drivers declared for the same amount of time, it’s better than stop-and-go traffic on the Turnpike. Plus, there was the Chinese food.

323 Here Ross is in upstate New York, ready to drive his grandfather to the P&C.
